The magic of a greeting: How to create the perfect elf welcome letter

02.02.2025

Elves — Santa's little helpers — are among the favourite Christmas themes. Imagine the joy you'll bring your child when they find a special welcome letter from an elf, full of kind words and personalised content. And how do you write such a letter to make it a memorable keepsake? Here are some tips.

Who are elves?

Elves are a group of Santa Claus' jolly helpers. Every day, these friendly characters make sure that the Christmas preparations go as expected. They receive thousands of letters from children all over the world, make toys and wrap presents. And when the eagerly awaited magical night arrives, they help Santa pack all the gifts onto his sleigh.

Of course, work isn't everything. Elves love spending evenings by the fireplace, singing merry songs and, occasionally, playing a little prank on Santa Claus.

Elves are well-known and well-loved characters who often appear on posters or in Christmas films. As such, a letter from an elf is bound to be a special surprise for your child.

How do you create the perfect elf welcome letter?

How do you prepare a letter from an elf? What information, stories and trivia should it contain? Here are a few tips.

A magical introduction

The first words in the letter should set a festive mood and immediately transport the child into a world of Christmas magic, such as:

"Ho, ho, ho! Hello, dear [child's name]! It's me [come up with an elf's name, e.g. Gnomie, Winter Flicker], one of Santa's helpers. I am writing to you straight from the North Pole, where the preparations for Christmas are in full swing!"

This kind of introduction will make the child feel special and engaged in a magical story.

Incorporate personalised details

Personalisation is the key to creating the perfect elf welcome letter. Be sure to mention specific situations from your child's life in your letter, such as school success, help at home or other positive events. For example:

"I've heard from Santa that you did a great job learning to ride your bike this year, and you always help your mum in the kitchen — well done!".

Such details make the letter more authentic.

Tell a story about the life of an elf

Children love stories! For example, you can describe how the elf and their friends are preparing for Christmas at the North Pole. Details of elf duties, the production process or the packaging of the toys would certainly be an attractive highlight. For example:

"The days in our workshop are full of laughter and work: we wrap presents, bake gingerbread and make sure that every well-behaved child gets a special present. Did you know that we have a special elf whose only job is tying the bows on gifts? It's a really difficult task!"

It's this kind of detail that builds a magical world that we all love, whatever our age.

The next part of the letter could include information about the elf's leisure time, their favourite activities or playing with other elves. You could write about things like:

  • snowman making competitions,
  • snowball fights,
  • evenings by the fireplace with Santa,
  • Rudolph's glowing nose,
  • Grumpy the Elf, who has recently started to whine a little less,
  • Santa's sleigh.

Encourage interaction

A good elf welcome letter is not just about reading. Encourage your child to write a response or engage in creative activity:

"If you feel like it, you can draw a Christmas tree to decorate our workshop! You can also write me a letter; I'd love to know how you're doing".

Other ideas for creative activities:

  • writing a poem for the elf,
  • drawing a dream gift,
  • making a Christmas ornament for the elf's room,
  • writing a Christmas story.

Conclude the letter with a heartfelt message

The ending of the letter should be kind, optimistic and full of Christmas energy:

"I can't wait to see the smile on your face on Christmas! Remember that you are special and we will always remember you at the North Pole. Sending you magical hugs! [Elf's name], your elf"

Add handmade elements

If you decide to print the letter, add some finishing touches like:

  • A small drawing of an elf in the margin.
  • An "elf seal" imprint (e.g. a glitter stamp).
  • A Christmas sticker or some artificial snow in the envelope.

You can also manually make the decorations for the letter and for the envelope.

Why create an elf welcome letter?

Not only is such a letter a beautiful keepsake, but it's also a great way to build festive spirit and strengthen family traditions. An elf welcome letter helps to develop your child's imagination and creates memories that will last a lifetime.
